Today, the local sports media got a chance to catch up with Coach Avalos, as well as offensive and defensive coordinators, Bush Hamdan and Spencer Danielson, and got some details on how the team has been preparing for San Jose State. Additionally, all three of them had some fairly extensive comments about the recent activity at the quarterback position that’s worth listening to.

This is what it looks like when you’re on the hot seat. Let’s be really honest about TG10. He’s a great athlete, just not a good QB. We saw only raw talent last year, however, it takes more than that. We and the coaches thought he could be coached up in the off-season. It didn’t happen. The timeline for him was rushed. He was supposed to come in after Bachmeier left in a natural rotation. Last year’s success was all on Koetter. There is a lot of blame to go around. It’s not TG. Bush has been given an impossible… Read more »
Who hired Avalos? An agency of Dickey
There’s a lot of Dickey fans around here. I am not one of them. He and Apsey have: Canned a successful wrestling program to create a baseball team (how are they doing these days?), doesn’t have such a great track record in coaching hires so far. A lot of fundraising hype that really doesn’t amount to anything if the athletic programs are a bust. Didn’t we also have a nationally competitive swim and dive team? So we went from nationally competitive in tennis, gymnastics, wrestling, indoor track and field, cross county and probably more that I don’t track to what… Read more »
I didn’t think Dickey and Aspey worked together. Maby I have the time line wrong but I thought there was a time when BSU was without an AD and FB coach so BSU hired a firm/agency to do the hiring. Forget who got hired first Dickey or Avalos.
Oh really?!? Sounds like I might have some misplaced anger towards Dickey.
Bob Kustra and Curt Apsey were the ones who decided to cut the wrestling program in 2018. baseball was cut in 2020, and Dickey was hired in 2021. A month or so later Avalos was hired.
It was Dickey. However, to be fair, he was barely on the job when he had to make the hire. Dickey has been pushing innovation, infrastructure, NIL collective collaboration, etc. I see a ton of upside with Dickey. Now, though, he has to fire a coach (assuming Avalos is what he is) and hit a home run with a new one. If he were to make another bad hire, then he should be on the hot seat.
I think Harsin is waiting next to his phone.
I don’t want to see that. However, there has been some pretty solid results in recent years with coaches in their second-time-around (Tedford at Fresno, for example). There has also been some real hot garbage (Brady Hoke at SDSU). Maybe Harsin learned from his humbling at Auburn and would come in hungry and ready to roll? Not sure, but I do think he is an upgrade over Avalos.
Those are my thoughts too. Harsin left the door open at his first presser at Auburn. “No matter what, I still bleed blue.” Also with regard to Harsin, all his head coaching years with Boise were in the Mountain West. Just a smidge tougher than the WAC, though many teams in the WAC ended up in the MWC. The early Petersen years spoiled the fan base. All the stars were aligned in the Bronco’s favor, except for Nevada. If Harsin would reappear, it might take a little time to turn things around. I thought Harsin’s best years were his first.… Read more »
Wouldn’t bother me to see Harsin back. He was just the right amount of arrogant for my liking. He didn’t let it affect how he called the game. That new Oregon coach would be an example of the opposite. He lost the game against Oregon State due to his arrogance. Then that Portland 70 point trouncing was just embarrassing. They aren’t even a good FCS team. What exactly are you proving there. Will cost them more games in the future.
Harsin at least recognizes what a successful team looks like.
I followed Harsin at Auburn. He wasn’t Auburn’s type. He ran the program and cared little about alumni. He didn’t kiss you-anybody’s know-what, he wasn’t a good ole boy, he wasn’t from the South, he didn’t pamper the prima donna’s, he didn’t say ya’ll, he was no BS, and the good ole boys behind the scenes did what they could to undermine him. They started rumors about him and his family. They weren’t about to let an outsider be successful. This is not my narrative, it came from their fans unafraid to speak out. If Harsin were to return, I… Read more »
Avalos is inspiring. Wow! Flat, no expression.
