A Familiar Face Gets A Promotion
There had been widespread speculation that Erik Chinander would ultimately be elevated to the role of defensive coordinator. Today, that title was officially given to him, in addition to retaining the role of defensive line coach. It’s worth clicking the link in the X post below to see a full summary of his career. He’s achieved some impressive things as a defensive coach, particularly in Oregon’s run to the national title game and UCF’s one, lone, singular, solitary, Boise State-esque season in 2017.
(Did I make it clear enough that even though UCF made it to three NY6 games, they only won one of them? Did it come off as sufficiently smug? Good!)
For real though, Erik has been a great defensive coach for Boise State. He came in with a lot of experience, but a low-key value that he’ll also provide is more of a network for Spencer to tap into for future coaching hires. In addition to UCF, Chinander has spent time at Oregon, Nebraska, and with the Philadelphia Eagles. Danielson has really only ever coached at Azusa Pacific and Boise State, so it will be valuable for him to have a connection to the coaching talent pools that are in Chinander’s network. Additionally, Chinander has been a phenomenal recruiter, even being named a top-25 talent in that role in 2021, while he was still at Nebraska.

I think the coaches sense something in the air. It’s not good to stray from a program that is poised for great things next season.
It is hard to judge how confident Danielson and Bush are in Madsen for next year. However, I think it would be foolish not to try to get an experienced QB from the portal.
