According to a tweet from Pete Thamel, this is the answer after a long fall of questions. There’s no guarantee that he will remain the starter, but for now, Maddux Madsen is (reportedly) the starting quarterback for Boise State when the season opens at Georgia Southern on August 31st.

Ultimately, the promise was–and presumably will always remain–that whoever gives the best chance for Boise State to win will start. It appears that as of right now, that answer is Mad Dog.
For what it’s worth, the offense was very productive when Maddux was on the field and he’s only seemingly improved in another off-season of experience.

Maybe I’m reading too in between the lines, but the focus being on “who can win us game one” and comments like “At this point, Maddux can operate our offense at a higher level” and “Maddux gives us the best opportunity to win game one” all seem to carry the implication that Maddux might not be starting the entire season. They might be revaluating the position throughout the season based on how Maddux plays and how Malachi progresses in practice.
Good catch. That’s certainly interesting. He emphasized it won’t be a two qb system, but that just means they won’t play two in the same game unless one is benched. It seems they’re specifically leaving the door open to continuing opportunity for Malach later on in the season or even next season. But what are the chances Malachi sticks around if he doesn’t become the starter by the end of this season? Whatever anybody says, we need NFL level QB talent in Boise. If that’s Madsen, great, but I kind of doubt it so hopefully Malachi can still be that… Read more »
Chances are that if Malachi doesn’t get serious game time he won’t stick around. Then again, transferring to a third school in as many seasons doesn’t look good as far as starting at the next school either. Malachi seems like a really good kid who has his head in the right place. In my opinion he has more of an upside than Madsen so I wouldn’t be surprised if he passes him to earn the starter position.
That’s what I heard, as well.
This leads to the question; how good is Mad Dog? He beat out Taylen Green and now Malichi Nelson can’t out dull him. Not to say Green can’t move around him but, thus far, Madsen is impressive.
Or worse: what if neither of them are very good 🥶
What if it’s:
Bachmeier: F
Green: D
Madsen:C
Nelson:C-
We’ve had such godawful qb play the last few years that comparing one to another doesn’t really say much
My son and I were chatting about this last night. We came to the same conclusion-he’s the starter for game 1. Period. With 3 years experience with the offense, this isn’t a surprise. Had a young man with 6 months experience been named the starter, we’d be looking at another Kellen Moore…or better!
There’s no reason why a 5* QB shouldn’t be. We need another Kellen Moore. Or at least an NFL tier qb (which in a way would make him greater than Moore). Maybe Ole Malachi just needs some more time. Even Moore redshirted and had a whole year to learn the offense.
Didn’t expect it to be honest. I know Madsen was a prolific passer in High School, but Nelson has elite arm talent. Not surprised that Madsen was ahead in the competition from day 1 due to his experience last year. I wonder how much Dirk relying on the power run game played into the decision. Maybe he doesn’t need a QB with elite arm talent, but instead one that understands the scheme and will make the right decisions with the play calling and audibles. If everything goes through our run game, then the QB would need to be capable of… Read more »
This is going to be a season for all seasons. Like “Boise,” said, it will be a run-heavy offense but man, look at those receivers. There are a lot of horses in each stable.
which one will start in the national championship game?
