A month ago, renowned First Kick Was Good commenter Jittery made a comment that caught our attention.
Admittedly that’s a low bar since I read all the comments, BUT it was an especially thought out and written piece, and one I have been meaning to respond to.
The Sparknotes of the comment is that Jittery lamented our lack of presence on the YouTube and podcast waves of the internet among other things.
It’s probably a fair ask, although these days we’re just trying to write enough to keep up with reasonable production out here, so I think content expansion to audio and visual spheres will be on hold for the time being.
WITH THAT SAID
I sorta accidentally got us on TV and the radio the past couple weeks… The cause? Nothing other than the #HEI2MAN agenda.
5 Minutes of Fame
A week ago, Big Noon Kickoff made it’s way to Provo, and so did the HEI2MAN flag. On the center left of the video you can catch the flag (although I must’ve been taking a breather at the beginning, because you don’t really see it waving until the second time they cut to the desk).
Now there’s a story to all this. A good one too, I think. I won’t write it here, because in a rarity for First Kick Was Good, it’s already all on video.
Mike and Johnny had me on the KTIK radio show on Thursday to tell all about my excursions with 3am wakeups, express mail, and hardware store scavenging, but most importantly to discuss the HEI2MAN agenda:
The Campaign
Now, I don’t write this so you can hear about your 2nd favorite FKWG writer’s 5 minutes of fame. For those that listened a bit to the clip, there’s a rhyme and a reason to all this. We’re talking about a Heisman campaign, with stickers and buttons and all that comes with that.
Unlike actual football games, we aren’t on the sidelines in the PR battlegrounds. So it’s just a popularity contest? Yeah, pretty much.
It’s a popularity contest with real implications. Besides any potential recruiting pitching you can do with Heisman trophy winner in the history books, the AP voters, the college football committee, they don’t really watch the games, at least not many of them.
But thanks to the relentlessness of social media algorithms, they’re force-fed Ashton Jeanty home run TDs, and they’re forced to wonder about those Broncos. That’s what we need.
So I say, if you have Gameday or BNK kickoff near you, wave that HEI2MAN flag. (And let me know if you need one!) Retweet those Ashton Jeanty runs, and like those Tik Toks. Let’s keep this hype train moving.
Fandom
All of this is to say fandom matters.
It’s not just enjoying the game but being a part of the game too. It’s why we’re here, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t say how grateful we are over here for all of you.
A lot has changed since the early days of OBNUG , but we’re proud to have this community that’s followed us wherever we’ve gone.
And if you’ll let me be sappy just this once (and other times if I want to be), I’d like to bring out Jittery’s words:
“Thanks, First Kick, even though God is no longer in your name, you’re still doing the Lord’s work.” -Jittery
Thank you Jittery, thank you commenters like Ronald Thompson Dorn over on Facebook, and thank you to everyone that reads and engages with our work, however you do it.
Thanks for being here, thanks for following, and thanks for being the reason this is so special.
Go Broncos.

Great story, Hunter. I’m glad Johnny and Prater took the time.
Keep on keeping on.
I’m glad you had a chance to give my comment a read.
