85 days is still a lot of days away, but at least we’re out of the 90s! More than that, we’re actually midway through the 80s. South Florida, here we come! *ahem*…in 85 days. Today we’ll be highlighting the wearer of that particular jersey number, Tight End, Matt Lauter

Stats

Height: 6′ 3″

Weight: 240 lbs

High school: Torrey Pines HS, San Diego, CA

How’d he get to The Blueâ„¢?

Despite being a three-star recruit, Lauter only received offers from Boise State and UNLV. Apparently, he’s not much of a gambler because he took the sure bet and declined a career in Las Vegas, in favor of one on The Blue.

Nickname

“Black Powder Lauter”

Man is EXPLOSIVE

Career Highlights

First and foremost, dude is smart. He’s made the Academic All-Mountain West three years running. So, that’s good.

On the field, Lauter had a decent sophomore season (157 yards and 3 TDs) before really blowing up as a junior. His 47 receptions last year, for 619 yards and 7 TDs was actually even more impressive than you think. Those 47 receptions were the most by a Boise State tight end ever; the yards, 2nd. As for the receiving touchdowns, his seven scoring grabs led the whole team. It was 5th among tight ends, nationally. He even seemed to play his best against top competition. He had 96 yards and at least one TD against both Washington State and Penn State, and was also heavily utilized in the conference championship game (ironically, against the other team that offered him a scholarship).

2025 Prospectus

Lauter has grown into not just one of the most reliable players on the team and one of the best tight ends in the country, but is likely going to end up getting drafted into the NFL if he keeps up his production. Honestly, even if his production somewhat dips under a new offensive coordinator, he’s probably already done enough to get on the radar of NFL scouts. Regardless, it would be incredible to see him build on his highly successful junior campaign and that’s the prediction we’ll officially make: As the clear TE1, Matt Lauter will outproduce his 2024 self and again be among the leaders on the team in receiving touchdowns and receptions.

Is he on Twitter?

Indeed. @MatthewLauter

Completely made up fact

Lauter’s hands are so strong that once, in a high school game, he collapsed them with such force on the football that it popped like a balloon. The opponent’s canine mascot, mistaking it for a firework, hid under the bench and peed a little. So did the rest of their team, incidentally. Lauter, meanwhile, trotted into the end zone with the deflated husk of the pigskin…
