What Happened?

Broncos fall at home to D2 Hawaii Pacific 79-78. Hawaii Pacific was led by Joshua West, who scored 23 points, shooting 56% from the floor. The Broncos were led by transfer Dylan Andrews with 15 points and 9 assists. A few stats to set the scene for this monumental loss: Broncos shot 10-33 from behind the arc and had 12 turnovers, leading to 23 points for Hawaii Pacific.

When I first saw this game, my thoughts were: Who’s going to lead us in scoring? Who I’m going to overhype this season? Now my thoughts are: Who is the leader of this team? Who is going to play defense? It’s easy to look down on a D2 team that went 14-12 last season. It’s another to absolutely phone it in for a whole game, thinking you’ll win because you’re big and mighty BSU.

Highlights???

Sure, I could show you the backdoor alley-oop to Spencer Ahrens or the couple of nice passes that led to easy buckets. All it does is put a band-aid on the stump of a missing arm. This team was hyped to be one of, if not the best, on paper team in Broncos’ history. I guess that’s why we say that the game is played on hardwood with a basketball instead of on paper.

Where Do We Go From Here

I’m not used to writing rock bottom recaps this early in the season. There isn’t even enough sample size to critique the coaching decisions and lineups. A few things did stand out that were positive. This Broncos team might have 2 of the best Freshmen in the conference with Spencer Ahrens and Aginaldo Neto. Spencer looked like a stronger Pearson Carmichael, and Neto had a first step that would blow the socks right off his defender. I think if this team has any chance of improving, it will be on the shoulders of those two players, plus Andrew Meadows.

What’s Next?

The Broncos welcome Utah Valley to Extra Mile Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m. The football team is on bye, so come on out to see if the Broncos can get their first win of the season. Balcony tickets should only be around $9 so come out to see the new and improved Broncos.
