#4, Maddux “Mad Dog” Madsen, Fifth Year, QB

How’d he get to The Blue™?
As a high school junior, he threw for 4,044 yards and 48 TDs. He ended up changing schools in time for baseball season his senior year and led his new team, Lehi High School, to their first state championship since 1981. Per broncosports.com: “he pitched and played infield that season (hit .455 with 11 2Bs, 4 HRs and 42 RBI)”
Maddux was part of the inaugural Avalos class in 2021. He got the offer after Katin Houser de-committed from Boise State to Michigan State, and it seems like it’s worked out very nicely for us. He was rated as the #21 high school player in Utah and designated a 3 star QB. Madsen chose the Broncos over the Lobos of New Mexico.
Nickname
“Mad Dog”
This nickname has been with him since at least high school, and it seems to fit with his playing style, where he demonstrates great toughness and fearlessness. Especially when he decides to tuck the ball and run it. But…judging from the season ending injury incurred on one of those runs in 2023, we should all hope it’s not frequently necessary for him to do that!

Career Highlights
In 2023, Maddux outplayed Taylen Green, which led to a rare midseason QB change, before suffering a season-ending injury. He followed that up in 2024 by first beating out the former #1 high school recruit (in the entire country; all positions) and then put together an incredibly efficient campaign. He threw for 3,018 yards, 23 TDs, and 6 INTs, adding another 221 yards and 5 TDs on the ground. Also, zero fumbles. The offense was very productive under Maddux’s leadership in 2024. However, in 2025, there was bit of a regression but mostly some bad injury luck they cost him to miss several games. His TD/INT ratio ended up 18:9 (with 4 rushing scores) and completion percentage dropped from 62% to 58%.

2026 Prospectus
Undisputed starter. This is it. The final year. The last opportunity to leave his mark at BSU So far, he’s had a pretty decent career, but in 2026, he has the chance to silence the critics about his performance vs power teams and really end his Bronco tenure with an exclamation point.
