Broncos Beat Cougars in Palouse Payback: Game Recap

Returning to the scene of one of the most devastating and improbable losses in Boise State history, the Broncos returned to Pullman to take on Kirby Moore’s Washington State squad. This time, after taking a 31-10 lead in the 4th quarter, (with 21 unanswered) the Broncos didn’t allow the Cougars to do anything else and held on for a solid win.

First Quarter

After forcing a Bronco punt to start the game, the Cougars did nothing with their first possession. Despite Jeremyah Lane’s best efforts to immediately give them a second possession, the Broncos recovered a muffed punt and brought their offense onto the field. Madesn and Rasean Jones then wasted no time plinking their way down to the red zone, where Sire Gaines punched it in from nine yards out.

Second Quarter

The second quarter devolved into a back and forth punt fest. Eventually, the Cougars capitalized on two fourth down conversions to eventually get on the board with a one yard TD plunge with 46 seconds left in the half.

The Broncos took the remaining time before the half to plow down the field and almost had a chance to get a TD but eventually settled for a field goal when the clock got down to five seconds.

HALFTIME

Third Quarter

After trading possessions a few times, the Cougars managed to put together enough of a drive to get in field goal range and they capitalized from 47 yards.

Fourth Quarter

The Broncos started off the fourth quarter by finishing off a productive drive with a scoring strike to Cam Bates.

Soon after that, the Broncos got the ball back when Boen Phelps stepped in front of a pass that seemed to be intentionally thrown to him. Within a few plays, Dylan Riley–who had been having a fairly quiet day–took a handoff around the right side and all the way down a third of the field for a TD.

After forcing another three and out, the Bronco offense took the field again. After three plays…Dylan Riley AGAIN. Right side. 72 yards. Tuddy.

Observations:

  • Dylan Riley, man. It seemed like something was off for him to start the game. He only had 18 yards in the entire first half and Sire seemed to be breaking more tackles. But then, in the second half, my man went off for 110 yards and 2 TD! Almost all of it in the 4th quarter.
  • Stacks of sacks. Technically only four, but there were a lot of instances of WSU’s QB just barely getting the ball off before getting taken to the groud too.
  • Not great third down defense, but great open field tackling is back, and the DBs actually looked pretty solid. Aside from a very ill advised, textbook targeting call on Roman Tillmon.
  • Another week, another “0” in the category of Maddux Madsen turnovers. And he also had some sneaky, opportunistic runs to pick up some chunks and get first downs.

We will see you all at home next week when Boise State is back home to take on Texas State for the first time.

Go Broncos!
