On a day known as “Black Friday”, when everyone usually takes the day after Thanksgiving to go harass Target associates or trample shoppers at Wal-Mart, CBS decided to host some early morning football and tagged Boise State – Utah State for the 10am slot.

USU won the toss and elected to defer.

1st Quarter

This quarter was mostly punts, excepting a 52 yard Utah State field goal attempt that they graciously blocked themselves.

2nd Quarter

Boise State opened up the scoring with a great drive capped by a Green to McAlister 4 yard TD pass. After a quick Aggie 3 and out, the Broncos took a short drive before ending with a 50 yard Green-to-Caples bomb for a TD.

More punts were traded, until a long BSU drive culminated in yet another Green to McAlister connection for an additional 6.

Utah State took over for a l-o-o-o-ong half-ending drive, finishing it out with a short TD run and no time on the clock.

Halftime, BSU 21 – 7 USU

Utah State took the second half kickoff down the field for a grinding drive, capped with a field goal. Boise State immediately answered with a Green to Matlock 1 yard TD, in a replay of last year’s big man TD. Which was also Matlock. And also against…Utah State.

Utah State had a promising drive die out on downs, and the Broncos went 3 and out. The Aggies took the next kickoff deep, messed around for a minute, then bombed it for 75 and a TD.

Boise State’s next drive fizzled into a punt to open the 4th quarter, and Utah State again ground out a touchdown drive to pull within 5 at 28-23 (failed 2pt conversion).

The Broncos took the ensuing kickoff, needing to score or bleed the clock. Unfortunately they could do neither. A short drive ended in a midfield punt to USU.

With the game on the line, the Aggies drove down the field, but Gabe Hunter picked off Legas, just outside the Boise State end zone!

Boise State then had the ball on their own 10 with a minute and a half, needing a first down to bleed out the clock and the Aggies’ two timeouts. Jeanty got stopped by a committee of defenders for a loss of one, but then Taylen called game with a keeper that made it to the left corner and 91 yards to the house. And yes. It looked like he was running in slow motion but he still blew past the whole defense like they were on pause. Those crazy-long strides!

At that point, Utah State was down 35-23 but still wanted to take some shots. Unfortunately for them, Seyi Oladipo wanted a pick six. And he got it. Legas threw it right to him and he took it to the sideline and all the way down for a 48 yard touchdown.

FINAL: BSU 42 – 23 USU

Some notes:

  • Kohl the Tee Dog was finally outraced
  • JL Skinner got tagged for targeting early and was ejected, but will be back next week. He did stay involved coaching the secondary in street clothes.
  • Andrew Simpson was EVERYWHERE this game, perhaps only outdone by Seyi Oladipo in the 4th.
  • Taylen Green has WHEELS
  • Injuries included George Holani getting a shoulder stinger after a run, Tyreque Jones getting carted off the field, and several defensive linemen getting taken out late.
  • The Broncos will be back in action on December 3rd in the MWC Championship Game against Frenso State.
