On a day known as “Black Friday”, when everyone usually takes the day after Thanksgiving to go harass Target associates or trample shoppers at Wal-Mart, CBS decided to host some early morning football and tagged Boise State – Utah State for the 10am slot.
USU won the toss and elected to defer.
1st Quarter
This quarter was mostly punts, excepting a 52 yard Utah State field goal attempt that they graciously blocked themselves.
2nd Quarter
Boise State opened up the scoring with a great drive capped by a Green to McAlister 4 yard TD pass. After a quick Aggie 3 and out, the Broncos took a short drive before ending with a 50 yard Green-to-Caples bomb for a TD.
More punts were traded, until a long BSU drive culminated in yet another Green to McAlister connection for an additional 6.
Utah State took over for a l-o-o-o-ong half-ending drive, finishing it out with a short TD run and no time on the clock.
Halftime, BSU 21 – 7 USU
Utah State took the second half kickoff down the field for a grinding drive, capped with a field goal. Boise State immediately answered with a Green to Matlock 1 yard TD, in a replay of last year’s big man TD. Which was also Matlock. And also against…Utah State.
Utah State had a promising drive die out on downs, and the Broncos went 3 and out. The Aggies took the next kickoff deep, messed around for a minute, then bombed it for 75 and a TD.
Boise State’s next drive fizzled into a punt to open the 4th quarter, and Utah State again ground out a touchdown drive to pull within 5 at 28-23 (failed 2pt conversion).
The Broncos took the ensuing kickoff, needing to score or bleed the clock. Unfortunately they could do neither. A short drive ended in a midfield punt to USU.
With the game on the line, the Aggies drove down the field, but Gabe Hunter picked off Legas, just outside the Boise State end zone!
Boise State then had the ball on their own 10 with a minute and a half, needing a first down to bleed out the clock and the Aggies’ two timeouts. Jeanty got stopped by a committee of defenders for a loss of one, but then Taylen called game with a keeper that made it to the left corner and 91 yards to the house. And yes. It looked like he was running in slow motion but he still blew past the whole defense like they were on pause. Those crazy-long strides!
At that point, Utah State was down 35-23 but still wanted to take some shots. Unfortunately for them, Seyi Oladipo wanted a pick six. And he got it. Legas threw it right to him and he took it to the sideline and all the way down for a 48 yard touchdown.
FINAL: BSU 42 – 23 USU

Some notes:
- Kohl the Tee Dog was finally outraced
- JL Skinner got tagged for targeting early and was ejected, but will be back next week. He did stay involved coaching the secondary in street clothes.
- Andrew Simpson was EVERYWHERE this game, perhaps only outdone by Seyi Oladipo in the 4th.
- Taylen Green has WHEELS
- Injuries included George Holani getting a shoulder stinger after a run, Tyreque Jones getting carted off the field, and several defensive linemen getting taken out late.
- The Broncos will be back in action on December 3rd in the MWC Championship Game against Frenso State.
End of the game was one of the best yet! I didn’t agree with Skinners targeting call, but I’m a fan. McAlister is going to be really really good. Taylen is going to be great. I felt bad for Utah that they got burned for the second year in a row on a Malock TD. Nahhhh, not really it was fantastic! I hope the D is on the mend next week and they are at least half way healthy. They will need to be on top of their game for the dogs. Until next time, I hope everyone had a… Read more »
Defenses in the last two games have done a good job of keeping Green fairly well contained in the run game but it’s good to see Koetter seeing what the defense is doing and calling a run when it’s needed. Final score certainly didn’t show how tight a game this actually was.
Fun game. Great win!! A few things: The zone coverage busts have to stop. It’s crazy to see 4 broncos defenders watch a wide open receiver catch a pass. And it happens over and over. Utah State was going to make green beat them with his arm. And he did. Then he beat them with his legs. Still a ways to go with his arm but he is better every game. Oladipo is a stud and should be on the field more. Fresno State is going to be a tough game!! Hope we show up with our A game!! And… Read more »
Am I the only one who was irritated at the end of the game? Twice, our guys ran into the end zone and gave the ball back to the enemy. I know it’s tempting to score. Even more tempting should be the opportunity to ice the game by kneeling the ball at the two yard line… especially considering the number of injuries and the ultimate goal in mind (staying healthy and fresh for the Fresno game).
TG 5 TD’S-WOW! 90+yard rushing TD, are you kidding me? Insane!
Last few minutes was kind of stressful! Loss of #21 T Jones tragic.
#99 MATLOCK TD & TIPPING USU pass leading to #54 Hunters interception HUGE!
FUN GAME! unfortunately a lot of players dinged up. Get well..fast!
Go Broncos!
Andrew Simpson was a beast this game! He was all over the field and layin the wood on ball carriers. He tackled through people.
Another great ending! Much different than _yoming but tremendous none the less. At least three times I thought the game was wrapping up and….BAM! Some other big play would happen. Kudos to our boys for never stopping and talking everything they can.
It looked as if the Broncos took their foot of the gas and when they saw something in the rear view mirror, put their foot on the gas again. Most teams find that difficult to do. When they let the other team have the momentum it’s hard to take it away. But this team did. Green’s run was likely one of the best in Bronco history. When he turned the corner it was over. Broncos have to hold onto the ball. Broncos gave up a lot of yards. But that’s not how the score is kept. Great game. Broncos will… Read more »
The best to compare that Green run to is Zabransky’s run against Hawaii. It wasn’t as long for sure, but he was also running away from dudes!!!
Huge relief! After todays practice many reports have shown #21T Jones and #7 E Noa practicing in full gear!! Hopefully that adds a spark to our defense and getting them dominating again!! Go Broncos!!!!
