As the offseason continues, one-off developments like this one will trickle in but this one is notable in that–yet again–the talent incoming (on paper) is unprecedented. Where a few weeks ago, Boise State landed a QB via transfer that was the top national recruit from the 2023 recruiting cycle, this time Spencer Danielson and Co. secured a commitment from a former 5-star wide receiver.

Chris Marshall joins the Broncos now as the highest rated junior college recruit, according to 247Sports. While he was five-star athlete coming out of high school, he’s taken a somewhat circuitous route to get here, going from Texas A&M and Ole Miss to his most recent stop at Kilgore Junior College. As described by BroncoSports:

“…he showed his explosiveness right away at Kilgore as Marshall went for 139 yards and two touchdowns in his first game with the Rangers before sustaining an ankle injury that sidelined him for five weeks. He would return later in the season to produce several big outings – a two-touchdown performance against Tyler and a 162-yard game against Blinn – before finishing the season with 21 receptions for 449 yards and five touchdowns.

Marshall spent the 2022 season at Texas A&M before spending the Spring 2023 term at Ole Miss. He then transitioned to Kilgore where he obtained his Associate’s Degree in December.”

Boise State Head Football Coach, Spencer Danielson, provided this quote, also from BroncoSports.com:

“We are excited to have Chris join our program and add some depth to our receiver corps,” Danielson said. “He has tremendous speed, impressive hands and the ability to play at the next level. But more than that, he is a hard-working young man that wants to contribute to this team and win. I look forward to seeing that energy and effort out of him this spring.”

As to the reasons why the route to Boise State was such a wind-y one? Some violations of team rules is the official word. There’s speculation out there–as I’m sure you’ve all seen–but it bears pointing out that none of the rumors point to theft, academic dishonesty, or any category of violence. Also, there’s this:

Honestly, if the message of “last chance” has really hit home, then this could be an incredible addition of on-field talent at wide receiver. Here’s hoping it plays out accordingly!

Have thoughts? Probably! Keep them cordial, of course, but please share them!

Go Broncos!
