This is the (mostly) slow season for sports news, with basketball finished for the season and the football opener still months away. The timing is somewhat providential, however, because one of our writers is graduating from college this month, two of them are moving–one, across town; the other following Will Hall to Mini-soda–and April kicks off the busy season for my actual job.
With all that said, we don’t want to leave you guys hanging. Because there has been some news, but also we want to continue to be a place where Bronco fans can come together and have lively discussions about off-season developments in our increasingly frequented comments section. So, we’re going to post periodic updates to provide the updates themselves, but also provide a forum for our community to chat.
To that end, here’s a few things for you all to nibble on until the spring game (April 20th):
Talent Shuffle For Men’s Basketball
The most notable offseason development for the men’s basketball team has to be the transfer addition (official today) of point guard, Alvaro Cardenas, from San Jose State.
Alvarez was one of the better players in the Mountain West last year, but was also one of the more highly rated point guards available in the portal. He started all 30 games last year as a captain for the Spartans and averaged 13.1 points per game. A junior last season, he will have one year of remaining eligibility.
This sets up for the Broncos to have a rather stacked team in the coming year:
This does, however, come with a caveat since Chibuzo Agbo has declared for the NBA draft. However, unlike with the NFL Draft process, basketball players can come back to school if they get the sense that the timing isn’t right for them. So, he’s not for sure gone. Kade Rice, Jace Whiting, and Kobe Young are gone for sure, though, as they are in the portal.
First (Closed) Spring Scrimmage is in The Books
On April 6th, the Boise State football team held their first scrimmage, which was a closed affair.
Worth noting that the QBs threw no interceptions. We’re just going to cross our fingers and hope that means the QBs were sharp and not that the defense was bad!
CJ Tiller: 5/9, 63 yards, TD
Malachi Nelson: 7/10, 73 yards, TD
Colt Fulton: 11/19, 108 yards, TD
Notably, no Maddux Madsen in that mix. Yet.
Here is Coach Danielson commenting on the progress thus far this spring.
Boise State Pro Day Results
In case you missed it, Boise State also had their pro day back on 3/26. Results were…surprising. In fact, somewhat unbelievable. While it’s impressive that Billy Bowens posted that 40 time, Cobbs must have a lingering injury or something because there’s no way he isn’t faster than a 4.67 40 yard dash time!
George Holani decided to rest on his sufficiently convincing numbers from the NFL combine.
That’s all we have for now. In the meantime, if you have thoughts about all Boise State related sports things, share them in the comments below. In the meantime…

IMHO; I think the coaches know right now who will start at QB. They always say the competition is wide open. Seldom is there a surprise.
No Spring game preview??!? Cmon. ☹️
BTW……
Jalen Neal transferred
Jaylen Clark was dismissed from the team
Concerning Neal: always hate to see a Bronco go. Hope he finds a home where he can get in some quality PT.
And the Clark thing, I’m not following it but if the allegations are true; was it the heat of the moment or a pattern of behavior? I always wonder what kind of environment he was raised in and what he saw as acceptable behavior. Sometimes sports are the only things kids coming from a hostile environment have to give them structure and commitment to something. It doesn’t always work.
Just noticed Clark entered the portal also. Makes one wonder what’s going on.
Anyway, Redding (RS Fresh, kicker) went portal also.
