Some happenings among Broncoland this week! Most notably, the outcome and standout performances of the spring football scrimmage and a major departure from Leon Rice’s basketball team.
Spring Game Recap
Despite all the (valid) hype around Malachi Nelson, he was not the first to get on the board. That honor went to the MVP for the game, Weston Derrick.
In addition to the efforts of our one and only six-star recruit, some other Boise State football players made their respective cases in the spring game. Here’s a nice thread of those, from our man on the ground. The defense technically won the scrimmage, 47-29.
The defense ended the first and last drives with big plays, Malachi Nelson led the offense to a plurality of scores and had some great throws. Also, despite it not being a touchdown, take a look at post #8, wherein Austin Bolt demonstrated how far he’s come since injuries made a mess of his first few years at Boise State. On paper, the Broncos haven’t had this much raw and/or returning talent on the roster…possibly ever?

Following the scrimmage…😂
Prior to the Game
Also, in case you were worried about Ashton Jeanty leaving the game…
Following the game, fans got the chance to get autographs from a couple dozen Bronco players. There was a lot of smiling, young Bronco faces. Confident kids too. I believe I overheard one of them telling Jeanty he played running back too and was coming for his job 🫢.

Also, while the identity of this Dalmas fan is unknown, what is known is that this level of fanhood is highly appropriate. The man is phenomenal.
…and I assume the jacket-wearer is a relative

Agbo to Transfer
At first, Agbo’s departure was suspected to exclusively be about testing the waters of the NBA. However, a new wrinkle developed this week.
Where he’s off to next isn’t known for sure, but Agbo himself has now confirmed that he is gone.
Baseball/Football Crossover Episode?
I would say “11 year old Jay would be beside himself”…but the sentiment seems to not exclude 30-something Jay.
Maybe Ken Griffey Jr can inspire baseball to come back to Boise State again (again).
No? Too soon? My bad…
See anything else in the news worth discussing? Let us know in the comments. In the meantime…

Being realistic; this team has potential only. Other than Jeanty, no one can say this team has proven really good.
With the expanded playoff (a semi-realistic shot at a national title game or at least a Cinderella journey to the semi finals before getting beaten) and a weakened-depleted AAC, I actually think Boise has a great chance of being the G5 rep in the playoffs. No one else in the MWC really seems scary this year. The team seems to have a higher ceiling than floor & there seems to be more optimism & harmony in the program after Avalon left. It just never seemed to click with him. Boise won the power ball with Peterson as coach & another… Read more »
Thoughts?! If the ACC semi-implodes (quite possible), & FSU, Clemson, Miami & North Carolina (,& possibly Virginia & NC State) leave the ACC, there are only really two options. The ACC will grab the best available options left like Tulane, USF (FAU?) Liberty / James Madison & Memphis or they might decide to become a national conference & add west coast partners to help Stanford & Cal (& SMU) and grab Oregon State, Washington State & maybe Boise, SDSU, UNLV & maybe CSU & USF (for Florida market) which would keep the conference semi-formidable (or just die) If the ACC… Read more »
Tiller, gone.
Dang. And after we specifically asked him not to??
(…it was implied)
John, this is quite a thoughtful analysis. You’ve explained it well. However, it is hard for me to follow the bouncing ball. That has nothing to do with what and how you wrote it; seems the current landscape of college football is like the bottom of a buzzard’s nest (all sh*t and twigs). It seems as though everything comes down to media markets. That said, the school that can capture the hearts of the American sports fan can make it regardless of where they are located. In some strange way I always felt Boise State has done the; “little Boise… Read more »
I guess he just didn’t feel like backing up Nelson for the next few years. I figured there was no way Madsen, Tiller & Nelson would all be on the roster in 2024.
Time to get a new QB in the transfer portal.
I think this is an all in moment for Boise State. The Pac 12 absolutely crapped the bed by not expanding when some Big12 teams got poached. Not sure if Boise State was counting on that ever elusive Pac12 invite or what, but after having missed the conference realignment lottery a couple of times now, this is the last chance to get in and I’m not sure the odds are good. At the end of the day I think the remaining quality ACC teams get pulled into the largest 3 conferences. The Pac12 is dead. They have their 3 super… Read more »
Concerning Tiller; I hope he lands someplace where he can take snaps and develop his skills further. He appears to be a fine young man and I think all of us wish him the best. Of course, if he faces the Broncos, I still hope he does well; and everybody else on his team sucks.
I agree with John Wick – this team, while unproven, seems to have a very high ceiling. We added lots of speed. I think that the secondary is bolstered and the D is reloaded. We have a stud stable of backs, a solid O-Line, and a loaded wide receiver corp. It all comes down to team chemistry and …. stellar QB play. If Nelson lives up to his talent, it could be a special season! Go Broncos!
