There is just over a week left until the first game. Have you done your inferno spa day to get ready for the humidity against Georgia Southern? Today, even though there are 9 days left, we are highlighting #17 on the roster, which is Linebacker Clay Martineau. Confused? Good.

Stats

Height: 6′3″

Weight: 220 lbs

High school: Oregon City HS, Oregon City (OR)

How’d he get to The Blue™?

Clay was part of a concentrated effort to recruit Oregon and was the 2nd best player in the state in his class and the 34th-best linebacker in the country. He committed to Boise State all the way back in June after mulling offers from Washington, Washington State, BYU, Nevada and Colorado State. After a strong senior season, Martineau was bumped to a four-star on 247 before enrolling with the Broncos in January.

Looks like a young Jesse Eisenberg to me.

Career Highlights

In his high school senior season, Martineau totaled 44 tackles (32 solo, 12 assisted) with 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, four pass break-ups, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one blocked field goal in eight games. That was just on defense. For his offense stats, he caught 29 passes for 471 yards and five touchdowns.

2024 Prospectus

The linebacker rotation seems pretty set at the moment. Andrew Simpson and Marco Notarainni seem locked in as the starters. Jake Ripp looks primed to man that #3 LB spot that both Simpson and Notarainni excelled in the past two seasons. Chase Martin had a solid debut last season and should be LB4 in 2024, with a heavy dose of special teams.

It will be hard for a true freshman to crack the two-deep, but Martineau has been getting rave reviews thus far in fall camp. He will definitely get the allotted four games to preserve his redshirt, but it’s just as likely he will play more. It would not at all be a surprise to see Clay in the Chase Martin role of becoming a force on special teams and getting some linebacker reps as the season goes on.

Is he on Twitter?

Mostly lots of QTs and RTs, but yes

Completely made up fact

Oregon is known as the Beaver State, and back in grade school, Clay was obsessed with home-state animals. He got a pet beaver for his 9th birthday, and they spent a summer building a damn together. Unfortunately, all the pictures were lost in a flood when the damn broke one day.
