What a wild couple of days!
Pac-12 files lawsuit against Mountain West, claiming its 5 new schools should not be required to pay over $50 million (more than $10M per school) for a MWC "poaching penalty" for each school Pac-12 got from MWC. This is different than $17 million exit fee each school must pay

A different take on this Pac-12 lawsuit…

The Mountain West wants to use money obtained from exit fees to entice current members to stay, right?
Well, if that money is tied up in a lawsuit, can they really use it as leverage? (Even if it seems like they could win the lawsuit.)
There are a lot of wild things flying around out there in the last 48 hours. It’s pretty hard to keep up with everything, but we thought it also might be nice to have a place to discuss all the developments as they occur. So…here you go!
Any thoughts, theories, feelings, emotions? Have it out in the comments! Of course, please be respectful and keep it PG. We have kids and nephews that frequent these pages too. Otherwise, though, go nuts!

You see, if you shoot the poop with some commenter here, you can come and throw your ideas around. What does that get us? A discontented, lazy rabble instead of a thrifty, fan base. And all because a few starry-eyed dreamers like Jerimiah Dickey stir them up and fill their heads with a lot of impossible ideas.
Henry F Potter (a paraphrase, of course).
I got that allusion right away!! Nicely done! I’m ambivalent about the move. I don’t see where it will provide any vast benefit but, I’m also not privy to any television deals or other revenue streams that perhaps are being worked out. I also don’t see where the MW is going anywhere fast. It won’t be allowed to become a P5 conference, that is a certainty. I suppose the big question is, will the PAC-12 be allowed to keep that distinction? I tend toward the negative on this one.
A few years ago when the Big East fizzled out into the AAC, they had a lot of branding content about being part of the “Power 6”, while everyone else only recognized the Power 5 conferences. I don’t think anyone really believed that they were a power conference, but as a result of this branding they established themselves as the top of the Group of 5 conferences. In those few years before they got poached by the Big 12, the G5 NY6 bowl berth ran through the AAC. Since there’s no way to actually find out which team out of… Read more »
You have a lot of presumptions and a “hopefully”, in your post. I’m not chiding, merely responding. What I see right now is the supposed “P4” wants to remain that way. Even if the PAC 12 becomes “best of the rest” as you put it, that still does nothing for an AQ to a major bowl. It remains as a place where a bone is thrown now and then. This is where I don’t see much positive in this. However, it is possible the PAC 12 somehow entices a few supposed “power programs” to join and the rest of the… Read more »
I have a lot of presumptions and a “hopefully” in my post because no one on this earth knows what college football is going to look like in 10 years. Presuming is all that any of us can do on either side of the argument. I don’t have high hopes of becoming or joining a power conference someday either. With that in mind, being in a best of the rest conference gives more publicity, better recruiting, better SOS, and higher rankings from the committee which in turn makes better access to the playoff. Replacing New Mexico on our schedule with… Read more »
Certainly, I was not turning cartwheels when the PAC deal was announced. I didn’t know enough about it. Because so many were excited, I wondered if there was something wrong with me.
I previously stated, that there is no PAC. It’s just two leftovers that no one else wanted.
This reminds me of The Big East situation more than a decade ago. I still think the PAC and MW should have outright merged.
I think Tyler has the right idea: this isn’t really about a massive conference upgrade or major amounts of money – it is about positioning the Pac-12 on par with or above the AAC and getting the playoff bid. Then, if one or two Pac-12 programs catch fire and make runs in the playoff, the conference (or those programs) might be “above the cut line” when the true power players break away and separate from the NCAA altogether. Will this give us respect, lots of cash and power status? No. Still, the PAC-12 branding helps us get a little more… Read more »
This could turn out to be a good basketball conference if Gonzaga decides to join. Also maybe Memphis will change their minds once there’s less uncertainty. The pac12 seems better than the AAC as it stands. Also, if more teams leave the MW it might dissolve, which might free a bunch of money? IDK so many possibilities…
Oh to be a fly on the wall… How many times have we seen schools make public statements that they are staying in their current conference just to announce a week later a move to another conference, e.g., the Pac 12 schools that left. I suspect talks have not ended. I also suspect that some of the media companies are involved as they see value in a better Group of 6 conference; one that may even elevate to Power Conference status. The entities are looking at the long haul and are probably predicting how things may look many years from… Read more »
love schools and teams, love the fans
why are conferences needed again?
Shocker. The Pac12 crapped the bed. Again. Still so very confused why anyone thought this was a good idea.
The Pac7 is looking really good boys! All that run around to end up in a 7 team conference engaged in lawfare with another 7 team conference. I’m sure teams are lining up to join in!!
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
