This game had a weird vibe from the jump.
Ashton Jeanty did Ashton Jeanty things and completely housed a 64-yard rush on the fourth play of the game to put the Broncos up 7-0 early.
But then Washington State came right back and answered with their own opening-drive score. John Mateer had a 52-yard run on the first play. Got to admit, impressive.
From there the defenses settled in and kept both offenses primarily in check.
Maddux Madsen was 8-15 for 113 yards at the end of the half with an INT. The Broncos really struggled to pass the ball while Washington State stacked the box and blitzed.
John Mateer was 14-17 for 130 yards and a touchdown. He did have an INT to end the second quarter.
The aforementioned best RB in college football had 109 yards and two touchdowns.
The second half is when the Broncos popped off.
And, you may have guessed it, lead by that man, Ashton Jeanty. With 9:08 left in the fourth Mr. Heisman had 247 yards and four TDs with a long of 64 yards. He’s a first round talent guaranteed.
Washington State did manage to score once in third which did feel like a pretty disappointing momentum-stopper for the Broncos.
The Broncos did step up this game (despite some questionable tackling). They had seven sacks on Mateer which, I hear, is pretty good. Keeping a fast-paced team like the Cougars behind the eight ball was pretty impressive by the Broncos defense. The Cougars offense was six of 19 for third and fourth down conversions. That’s rough. Broncos were 7-12 with a touchdown call to Matt Lauter on a fourth and one.
This is a great start to the future of Boise State football and the new conference affiliation.

My emotions were up, down, sideways and backwards during the game. It was a good one , and another W in the win column!
Well, we have an other-worldly RB and no QB yet. We were very one-dimensional and still, Ashton Jeanty… Even being targeted by the defense, he does his thing. I think that was most noticeable of the 4th and 1 where Madsen faked the handoff and threw to a wide open Lauter. They had to respect the run. Imagine if we had a passing game to match our stable of RB’s-we would be steamrolling everyone. Don’t let the QB stats fool anyone-most of those yards were by the receiver, not because that ball was flying through the air. Very unimpressive, to… Read more »
Fr. The passing game is a giant “what if”…
I think you’ve made the understatement of the year….unfortunately.
I liked Bronco Blymier’s comment on his podcast, “We are now a fourth-quarter team.”
