Goooooooood morning, BOISE STATE! Our little preview of SIX PAC AFTER DARK was bonkers in the best way. I don’t know how y’all calmed the adrenaline down and went to sleep, but rest assured I’m on about 4 hours of shut-eye.
Some thoughts on the game:
- There’s a LOT of games left, but Ashton Jeanty should be invited to New York by mid-season. The man is just on another level. Just go search “Ashton Jeanty” on TwitterX and sit back with some popcorn while he gets his flowers from EVERYBODY.
- The Defense just had their glow-up game. No, it wasn’t perfect, and the 3rd-and-whatever defense is still giving us collective PTSD, but that was an absolute beat down. Mateer is a solid, mobile QB, and he was running for his absolute life out there.
- The jury is still out on our boy Mad Dog. He’s game managing the hell out of these wins, and Jeanty and the tight ends might just be good enough to drag him into the history books, but if some defense manages to stifle Jeanty or (god forbid) he has to sit a series or two with a cramp, I just have no inherent confidence in Madsen to shoulder the entire offense.
- That said, I don’t really have any strong woo-woo for the backups right now, either. I just wish Madsen could take some real steps with downfield passing, because Jeanty’s outlandish performances are gonna get us some ridiculously open looks out there.
- And don’t get it twisted, I am ABSOLUTELY not questioning Madsen’s heart or drive. Watching the tape of some of those Jeanty TD’s, you can see Madsen absolutely busting ass to get downfield and block. He’s blue collar through and through, I just wish he could calm the butterflies in my stomach when he drops back.
- Tight ends are so back. If you’ve been a fan for a while, you know this is on a cycle and next season we’ll probably be lamenting the lack of Matt Lauter to bail out the QB, but until then let’s ride the wave, baby.
- JFR getting rolled up on by our own boy is gut wrenching, and I want him back ASAP. Also, this is the perfect excuse to go full #NeverPunt for a while, IMHO.
- I am begging the football gods to spare us further injuries, this is getting absurd quickly.
- Boise State set a new attendance record, and the crowd noise definitely played a part in shutting down the Cougars. I am an old guy with the opinion that nothing will top 2012 BYU for noise, but it looks like we’re trending positively for the extra man in the stands.
What else did you see?

Agree with your comments on Maddux. However; keep in mind he is a Redshirt Sophomore. I wish he were further along, but I watch a lot of Sophomores who make the same mistakes we see in Maddog. But here’s hoping….
I still like Mad Max, I just don’t like wathing him throw. Yes, he is blue collar, tough and determined. I just hope that turns into solid QB play.
Go BRONCOS!
What about that safety that the refs took away from the D?
Unsure how he could get the forward progress call when he was fumbling the ball. Seems like they could have bailed out their terrible forward progress call by making it a review of a possible fumble and recovery.
Silly. You got to deal with the good calls and the bad calls. Glad it didn’t swing the game.
In a word-disgusting. I’m with Boise on this one. How in the world could the refs possibly grant forward progress when he not only bobbled the ball but, he was RUNNING backward??? I think these refs must be from the same group of Chuck-e-cheese refs as last weekend.
And, also agree with the Madsen comments. He has heart, he has no problem being all in. Passing is an issue. Given he is a QB, that might be a problem.
We will definitely by limited by Madsen’s abilities. Wazzu was stacking the box and sending everyone. Koetter did the right thing and called the quick hitters. Madsen missed a lot of them. Those are easy passes and we have to be able to connect on them to get the defense out of the box. Of course, he also hit some and those turned into big plays. It worked out last night. Against a much better defense it will be tougher. A wins a win though! Great team effort. Glad to see the tight ends back! That will be a big… Read more »
(A.) Jeanty is the proverbial “lightning in the bottle.” (B.) D-Line is the proverbial “runaway train.” (C.) A word on punting. JFR was a stud last year because the offense left him with a lot of yardage to tag some boomers. Now he’s distracted by overthinking. I hope he’s okay. Broncos need him (D) A word on kickoffs. During his career, Dalmas has had to make too many possible TD tackles; risking injury. A lot of kickers will make a half-hearted attempt at a tackle; try an arm tackle, trip on the way to the runner, or run into a… Read more »
BSU is up to 21 in the AP, and 26 in the CP.
Those deep balls have been SO CLOSE. I think Mad Dog hits his stride in conference play and you’re gonna eat these words of doubt
That or Jeanty runs 400 yards per game.
I agree; there are some close ones but some hit receivers on the hands, helmets, or numbers.
watched it again – MM did quite well. single int wasn’t really on him, and many times he made the right decision and executed
I have to disagree with you on the INT. He threw it into triple coverage, and it wasn’t on target. The yardage MM is granted in the stats was on the receivers for the most part, not the ball in the air. He has the right mentality, he is certainly all in. He just isn’t passing well. Two long balls that were off, short passes were off as well. Not all, as certainly a couple receivers had drops. However, look at Mateer’s performance. The guy hit receivers. I don’t know as if we have an answer. I wish we did,… Read more »
Mild Dog Madsen. If this was Bachmeier or Green, we’d be calling for his head. It’s been so bad.
Not sure on that. Seems he’s compensating by making decisions quickly to avoid sacks, which in turn keeps the run game valid regarding yardage. That low sack count might be kind of big.
Hank is having a good year with Wake Forest. He’s in his sixth year–he should be.
TG 10? Well, 5 TDs 5 INTs 12 sacks, and 57% completion.
From game one, BSU receivers have been dropping balls perfectly thrown or should-haves. In spite of all that he is only 2 completions from being 60%. Not tremendous, but certainly better than TG10.
I haven’t seen very many drops. It is only a drop if it was on target. WRs need to bail out qbs from time to time by catching off-target bad balls, but I’m seeing a lot of bad balls
I just went back and looked over some game videos. There are not nearly as many drops as I thought. However, Madsen has made some incredible throws.
