First Quarter

The Broncos started hot with a 14 play drive that went 81 yards and took 7:11 off the clock. Jeanty jumpstarted it with 30 yards on four carries, a 4th down conversion later in the drive, but it was capped off with an 11 yard TD connection from Madsen to Austin Bolt.

Broncos 7, Beavers 0

Boise State forced a quick three and out and immediately went back to work. 11 plays and 53 yards later, they were back in the end zone. This time, on a 7-yard Ashton Jeanty run.

Second Quarter

Boise State was driving just before the half and made it deep into the Oregon State red zone before Jeanty had a very uncharacteristic fumble; just his second of the year. It was jarred loose from the left arm that had previously been in a brace for the last few weeks. The Beavers made it an extra costly play too. Two snaps later, Oregon State’s running back took advantage of a Bronco defender losing his feet and ran 83 yards for a touchdown. Prior to the 83 yard run, Oregon State had only mustered 72 yards on 14 plays.

Broncos 14, Beavers 7

Thankfully, Boise State decided to be aggressive with the remaining 1:48 of the first half and engineered a 75 yard drive on just 8 plays. Camper had a huge catch to keep the chains moving, but it was Latrell Caples (who aptly has the X handle @ TrellFor6) that scored on a beautifully designed pass play from six yards out.

HALFTIME

Third Quarter

Oregon State got the ball to start the second half but did absolutely nothing with it. The Broncos, however, drove down the field and appeared to cap the drive with a 32 yard TD run by Jeanty. Unfortunately, the play was called back for holding on Prince Strachan. Dalmas made sure the Broncos didn’t come away with nothing though. He split the uprights from 43 yards.

Broncos 24, Beavers 7

The Beavers got a little bit of a drive going with their second possession of the third quarter. Ultimately, it petered out at the Bronco 27 and they settled for a 37 yard field goal.

Broncos 24, Beavers 10

Immediately after getting the ball back, Jeanty broke free on a 61 yard scamper into the Oregon State red zone. Unfortunately, it didn’t result in a TD. After three plays, the Broncos settled on another Dalmas field goal. He was happy to oblige from 29 yards.

Broncos 27, Beavers 10

Fourth Quarter

The Beavers started to show some life on their next possession. They drove 75 yards on ten plays, converting a 4th and 2 along the way, before eventually getting into the end zone. They also converted for two. It was a pretty brutal sequence of events for the Boise State DBs, three plays in a row. Thankfully, they at least failed to recover their onside kick attempt.

Broncos 27, Beavers 18

Boise State did what they had to do and snuffed out two Oregon State attempts to stay in it by forcing turnovers on downs. They finally tied a bow on the afternoon when a 26 yard Jeanty run put Boise State in position to score again. With everyone keying on Jeanty, Maddux faked a hand-off, rolled out, and carried it in for 6 to put an exclamation point on the day.

Final Score: Broncos 34, Spartans 18

Observations:

  • Jeanty had 226 rushing yards and one TD, but he would have had close to 300 and at least another score, had it not been for a few very unfortunate holds. There was one big hold that negated a 32 yard TD, but another 25 yard rush went away for the same reason. Still…it was his fifth game this season where he went over 200 yards rushing (7th in his career). Just absolutely stunning production, even though he is clearly still limited by a few injuries.
  • Something to keep an eye on: The Boise State DBs struggled in the second half, but the wide receivers–while having some huge plays–also had some pretty bad moments. Bolt dropped a certain TD, Camper dropped another (probable) TD, and had a couple more drops on other downs. Jeanty would have had another 30 yards and an additional score if it hadn’t been for that hold on Strachan. Extra tough day for the wide receiver room. That said, Camper is a stud, and if he hadn’t been tackled in midair, out of bounds, he would have come down with one of the most incredible Boise State touchdown catches of all time.
  • Madsen’s final completion percentage won’t reflect it, but he was absolutely dealing in the first half. He had very strong connections with Camper and Lauter, especially. He also had a rushing touchdown to go along with two passing and no turnovers.
  • Mason Randolph sighting! He’s had a long, hard road to come back from an injury sustained at Georgia Southern. He made it into the game today though.

We’ll see you all next Friday vs…TBD; either UNLV or Colorado State for the Mountain West championship.

Go Broncos!
