What Happened?
The Broncos won in Reno, 70-69, and extended their winning streak to 2 games. Andrew Meadow led the Broncos with 24 points. Kobe Sanders led all scorers with 30 points while shooting 68% from the field. Tonight, they were led by the dynamic duo of Andrew and Javan, who finished with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Road wins take a team and tonight was the first big road win where everyone contributed. On a night when Tyson and Alvaro were quiet on the score sheet, Andrew Meadow stepped up. Thanks to Andrew, the Broncos kept it close in the first half. He had 11 at the break and the team was up 3.
That 3-point lead grew to 8 early on in the second half, but Nevada roared back to take the lead. There would be a total of 15 lead changes. Javan led the charge with 14 of his 17 being in the second half of the game. In crunch time, Tyson led the charge, which ended up giving the Broncos the win. It was a hard-fought, well-earned win.
Young Guns Lead The Way
This Broncos team is loaded for years to come. In one of the biggest road games of the year, a sophomore and junior led the team to victory. These close road games have been this team’s Achilles’ heel. When the Broncos went down 1 with under a minute left, I was having flashbacks to all our close losses this season. Javan then lifted the team (and me) as he secured the game-winning steal. The Broncos finally got that elusive Q1 road win and another resume-building victory. Once again, it is nice to see different people step up to help win games this season. On Wednesday night, it was the combo of Tyson and Pearson. Tonight, it was the combo of Javan and Andrew. Looking ahead to Wednesday against Utah State, I wonder who will lead this team to victory.
What’s Next?
As mentioned earlier, Utah State comes to town on Wednesday. If the Broncos can pick up that win, we could move to the right side of the bubble conversation. We started the night about 6 spots outside the tournament. Depending on the rest of the results of the night, we could move even closer to the field. This is exactly where the Broncos want to be in this part of the season. Playing their best basketball in Feburary, with their NCAA fates in their own control. Win our last 4 games and we are putting on our dancing shoes. Falter and we could be sweating it out in Vegas. Until next time…
