According to Bob Dorough, Three is a Magic Number. And, in this case, it was again. Three MWC titles in a row and all three at UNLV’s expense.
Gotta love it.
The Broncos started hot, jumping out to a 21-0 lead. From there, Boise State scored once more before the half, but UNLV put two TDs on the board in the final 3:08 before the break. Technically three, but Colandrea stepped out of bounds on a 50-ish yard TD run. They still scored a few plays later. The Broncos went into the locker room up 28-14.
Late in the 3rd quarter, UNLV put together a 9 play, 78 yard scoring drive and things got a little weird for a second because the lead shrunk to just 7, with 28-21 on the scoreboard.
Thankfully, that would be the last score of the game for UNLV, as Boise State went 10-0 in the final frame, which led to the end score of 38-21.
Maddux Madsen, in his first game back in over a month, threw for 289 yards on 17-31 passing and three TDs. He also scampered in for another rushing TD. It was a pretty good day’s work for the eventual Mountain West Conference title game Offensive MVP!
The Broncos rushing trio of Dylan Riley, Sire Gaines, and Malik Sherrod all put together solid performances.
Riley had 75 yards on 21 touches, but he and Sherrod also both had receiving TDs. Gaines went 64 yards on 9 carries and had a rushing touchdown.
Chase Penry almost broke the century mark in yards (96) on just three catches. Cameron Bates contributed 65 yards on three catches as well, to go along with a touchdown.
Defensively, Ty Benefield had seven total tackles and a big tackle for loss. This effort netted him the game’s Defensive MVP.
Boen Phelps had seven total tackles, a TFL, a QBH, and a forced fumble. Seems pretty good.
Colton Boomer even made a highlight when he knocked down a 50-yard field goal to conclude the scoring for the Broncos.
Next up is the postseason where it’s anticipated the Broncos would be headed to the LA Bowl, most likely against Washington. Can’t wait!

All I have to say is THREE-PEAT!!
Never had any doubts about this team, staff and fan base. 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Don’t judge me. I’m a fan.
3-Peat Baby!!!!
Sorry UNLV. Sometimes you have to remind the rest of the children who daddy is!
The way the defense started the game, I was hoping for a steamroller of a game. The offense then started in and, despite a few wonky passes, was looking pretty good. Madsen did some of the usual-missing open receivers but, he also completed some pretty nifty darts as well. Fortunately, the drops and turf monster trip-up didn’t hurt us. I was a little concerned that the second half would start just as it actually did. It seemed the third quarter was one of letting off the gas and allowing UNLV back into the game. Fortunately, the fourth was much better,… Read more »
Good finish.
If you take just one of any one of the top two BSU receivers from 2010 to 2020 and put him on this year’s roster, the Broncos end up in the CFP this year. (Pettis, Young, Miller, Sperbeck, SWR, Modster, Wilson, Hieghtower, Richardson, Moore, Anderson, Shakir). Or if McAllister stayed.
I agree in general. Not sure SWR, Modster, Kirby Moore, Anderson, or Richardson would be enough.
I wish we could find more rough diamonds like Sperbeck though. He was so reliable.
I’ve read some people hating on Caples. I think he is a fine receiver. A bit more penalty prone this year.
McCallister leaving was a big loss. He was a once every 5 years level receiver. If Bates stops dropping, he might be similar.
Richardson and Anderson have seasons with more than 50 catches. Moore had two seasons of 36 catches each. In one 36-reception season, he only played in 6 games. Modster had 68 catches in his senior year. SWR is second all-time for BSU in the number of receptions (233). Back to Richardson, Anderson, Modster, and Moore; their numbers would have been much higher if not for standing in the shadows of some of Boise’s best.
Disagree. This is where Madsen has his limit. He’s not accurate enough to allow our receivers to break plays. His deep balls are typically behind. Slants and outs are typically behind the receivers. Hooks and outs are so low that there is no opportunity for YAC. It gets us by in the Mtn West. Against better competition, it just doesn’t work. So I would argue you could stick Randy Moss and Tyreek Hill out there and you wouldn’t see much of a difference. Ok, well that might be an exaggeration… 😂🤣 But my point is that we are missing the… Read more »
They would help but, when the ball isn’t on target, I don’t care how good the receiver is. Madsen is at his potential. His height restricts how he can throw the ball over the line (as witnessed by more than one floating pass), and he simply isn’t on target more than he is off.
It’s rumored the Broncos are headed to the LA Bowl. It’s an early one – next Saturday!
