98 days till kickoff, but thankfully we’re still a ways away from 98 degree temperatures. Let’s enjoy that while it lasts on this Memorial Day weekend! Please also enjoy our subject for day 98…
#98, Herbert Gums, RS Junior, Nose Tackle

Stats
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 315 lbs
High school: Diboll High School, Diboll, TX
How’d he get to The Blue™?
Despite also playing…[lol]…*running back* as a sophomore (564 yards and 6TDs), Gums had specialized enough that by the time he was a high school upperclassman, he had become a coveted defensive recruit. As a four star talent, his list of suitors was long. It included offers from Stephen F. Austin, Houston, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Kansas State, LSU, LSA, and even New Mexico. Boise State offered him in 2019 and by August of 2020 he was enrolled.
The fact that he was so highly regarded and sought after probably has a lot to do with the fact that he could do all this…
Nickname
“The Detective”
You know…like an old-timey gumshoe.
(Weirdest way in the world to describe a private investigator, btw. No idea where it comes from)
Look-alike

One-man tank division, James Harrison
Career Highlights
Herbert got some reps in in 2020 and 2021, but he became integral to the defense last year, playing in all 13 games. He so far has 32 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, and 1.5 sacks
2023 Prospectus
I have been excited about Herbert Gums since I first saw his highlights in 2019. He started to do some good things last year, but I think this season he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor and be coming for souls. I anticipate a breakout season for The Detective and for him to not only get in on some Clydesdale packages for the offense, but to be a literal and figurative BIG part of the defense.
Is he on Twitter?
Yes, but be forewarned, it’s basically just retweets
Completely made up fact
Gums initially wanted to be a backup dancer, but that dream went awry when…well, remember Left Shark? Yeah. That was him. So, now he’s moved on to football.
Agree with Gums likely to have a good year this year. Like the nickname Gumbie better. When he comes onto the field the announcer should say, “Are you ready to Guuuumble!!!”
Expect huge things from this guy. He showed flashes of a really exciting career at times. Also got lost a bit, but I think he’s gonna breakout this year.
I’m hoping he has a break out year this season
