Today, the local sports media got a chance to catch up with Coach Avalos, as well as offensive and defensive coordinators, Bush Hamdan and Spencer Danielson, and got some details on how the team has been preparing for Wyoming. They also went into some details about some of the guys that are either back or soon to be back with Schramm, Holani, and Bolt all having returned to practice recently. They also talked about how this is the first time the starting five offensive lineman have been healthy and went into some additional details about the two QB system and the hail mary defense from last week.

(Video) Pre Wyoming Interviews with Boise State Coaches Avalos, Danielson, and Hamdan

I could’ve conducted this presser; Mumble jumble, double talk, and coach-splaining.
Yes, Andy does love to “coach-splain.” 🙂
I think, for better or worse, Madsen is going to start dominating the snap count here and I think that’s what the coaching staff wants to happen. You can run a two QB system, but I don’t think your passing QB can be the “change of pace” QB. Either you trust Green to throw and he’s your QB, or Madsen is your QB and Green is the change of pace guy. I don’t think it works any other way.
I agree with you. Based on the raw talent TG10 displayed last year, many thought he would improve during the offseason and become the second coming. Today, he still remains a raw talent. Maddog is clearly the better QB. Our offseason hopes have been dashed. Avalos should have seen this long before we have.
Is it TG’s fault or the coaching? I felt like from when he took over for Hank he progressed through out the season last year.
I would agree that it’s coaching. Dirk seemed to understand how to make the offense work around the player, and not make the player work around the offense.
I see that as being the difference maker. Bush hasn’t figured that out yet, and apparently neither has Avalos.
TG10 had all the experience coming into the season, plus he had the off-season. He can’t hit a slant, that’s not coaching. Maddog played little last year and had the same off-season as TG, which has shown the most improvement? If it’s Maddog, did they coach him up while coaching TG down? I think BSU would be fine if it had a decent D. This offense can run on an adequate QB. Everyone was expecting Holani not to get injured, but that’s always been him; it happens. That changes the entire offensive dynamic. TG was built for that. Dirk did… Read more »
Agree about Koetter’s presence last year being a huge difference maker. I think the common theme that spans our decade of dominance (2000-2011?) and even the decade of near dominance (2011-2020?) was quarterback play. In the later part of the 2011-2020 decade the major drop off was QB play. Up until Bachmeir we really had solid QB’s. Hell, even Southwick was a serviceable QB. And I think the common thread was in fact coaching. I said this last year but Green really needed a great QB coach in the offseason and obviously that didn’t happen. That should have been a… Read more »
Looking back, the Broncos had the RB room pretty well stacked during the golden years. Maybe not stacked like full but at least two guys who could deliver a punch. Recall the Florida State game, Holani, Vanburan, and Mahone were lethal. One could make the argument that BSU’s success has had as much if not more to do with RBs than QBs. Based upon success at the next level; Martin, Ajayi, McNichols, and Mattison. Though McNichols is modest in comparison with the others, he still played on Sunday. Ian Johnson and D J Harper were no slouches. I always thought… Read more »
Oh man, forgot one of my favorite RBs, Ryan Wolpin. And Jaylon Henderson is a former QB playing for a European pro league in Germany. By the way, I think Henderson would be a great QB coach–if anyone is interested,
This is a great point. We have had some serious talent in the backfield.
Something to remember with Dirk as well is that he admitted for the first few games at least they were only running a handful of different plays for Green. For a while all we had to do was run option plays, or at least plays that looked like read options, and it was unstoppable. But as others have pointed out, opposing teams have widened their defensive line to contain Green. Then they stack the box to try and contain Jeanty up the middle. That would seemingly open up opportunities in the passing game but for whatever reason we’ve struggled there.… Read more »
“Let’s not compare Hamden to Koetter, we’re talking at least 20 years more experience.” Well, you just compared the two to each other and that’s exactly the point. Hamden doesn’t have the experience to be in the position that he’s in right now. Bush may be a good coach, someday. But right now he needs a ton more experience at another level, as an assistant, or with a team that doesn’t care if they loose while he learns. Just not BSU here and now.
Maybe I should have said, “compare results or expectations.” However, I believe you knew what I meant, or maybe not, no matter. When comparing their careers, Bush now at age 37 has been to several more programs than Dirk at the same age. Bush’s experience is somewhat more diverse whereas Dirk’s first college coaching gig was as an OC. Results are the only way to compare. However, those results can be skewed by variables beyond Bush’s or Dirk’s control. Dirk’s offense, 33 points a game. Bush’s offense 30 points a game. Bush has played tougher teams. Dirk had a better… Read more »
Yeah, but….. it’s not as much a comparison of Hamden to Koetter. I would argue that it doesn’t take a Koetter level OC to scheme someone open when everyone on the field has their eyes in the backfield. We should have basic expectations here. This should be something that is easy to accomplish. How come every team we play is able to get receivers wide open across the middle?!?! We try to pass and they are into double and triple coverage. I don’t know what the deal is, but I have an expectation for our OC and he’s not hitting… Read more »
I’ll be your wingman. I’ll be disappointed if BSU goes to a two-QB scheme. I think they should ride the Maddog horse from here on out. Statistically, he’s the guy. And he’s got a heart the size of Boise. It’s time to let him have the keys. TG is proving himself to be no better than Hank; there are a lot of positives but… If TG10 goes portal, it means the competition is too tough. And freakish athletes don’t necessarily make good QBs. It’s up to BSU to find him a place to excel; even if it’s someplace else. He’s… Read more »
As aggravated and disappointed as we all are with this season, the truth is IF bsu wins out they will be in the mwc championship game. A coworker brought that to my attention. Now as crazy as that sounds it’s still a glimmer of hope. ( Btw ? If that does happen Avalos still has to go)
Will it into existence. It’s going to happen. I’ll be there with the Mrs. Saturday to root it on!!!
I think it would be hard to justify firing a coach if he takes you to the conf title game (especially if they win). That could screw up recruiting & scare away algood prospective coaches However, major changes are almost certainly coming to the staff & if Boise goes 6-6 or worse then Avalos is almost certainly fired. Jeremiah Dickey (AD) hitched his wagon to Avalos when he arrive& abd his own job is on the line if things don’t get fixed ASAP. At some point, the music stops (briefly) for all successful teams like the Lakers, Yankees, Patriots, etc.… Read more »
Metaphors always have holes in them. Raising tides won’t raise a boat that has a hole in it. However, I kid, your points are well taken–all of them. Indeed the music does stop but the programs you mentioned take action. Or, for example; Pete’s last year was not so good. However, he had a record of accomplishment. Clemson’s HC has a record of accomplishment. And the others you mentioned. Avalos has a record of what? If they stick with him and he overcomes, that’s on Avalos; good for him. I’m sure there is a lot of evaluation and consultation going… Read more »
They say if you aren’t part of the solution you’re part of the problem. As such may I humbly suggest this to all the nuggies( I’m a holdover from the sbnation days)
Id go to my second string linebacker corps and convert one to a fullback. Someone not only unafraid of contact but loves running over people. Run a power eye. If anything you force them to stack the box. Someone – most likely a tight end – will be wide open..
What say you?
I would say that if the power run game was the key to unlocking the pass game then we should be lighting defenses up for 400+ yards of passing every game. Jeanty is a 1 man wrecking crew. He doesn’t need a fullback, he will break tackles on his own. I believe that he literally leads the nation in scoring and yards.
There is no excuse for us not to have receivers in the open game after game. Well except that the QB can’t deliver the ball and even if he does the receiver can’t catch it.
Here, here, buy that man a beer. And whatever the Socalbsufan is having. In fact, I’m buyin’ for everybody.
Great comments on Green/Madsen, etc., etc. My two cents is that “2-Quarterback” systems are untenable. I would put TG in as the starter and Mad Dog in as the backup for this week. If TG can FINALLY get into a rhythm and hit some passes, great. He also helps open up the inside runs because of the width of the D-Ends. But, if TG looks like garbage and continues to either chuck it deep or throw behind people on slants, you put in Maddux and don’t look back. I hope the boys can win out and turn this season around.… Read more »
“Put Maddux in and don’t look back.” That would mean making a decision and displaying leadership. What happens if Maddux looks bad? Well, not Tiller but then TG should be given another chance. Prima donas need some time on the pine to adjust their mind.
Think this is kinda funny.
