So, this is the answer to all the riddles…
After weeks of speculation, Spencer Danielson has been officially named the head football coach of the Boise State Broncos.
All the flight tracking of athletic director, Jeramiah Dickey’s, plane was for naught as it was ultimately a clever illusion, and/or due diligence on the other coaching candidates.
Ultimately, this selection comes as no surprise. More than being the first interim head coach to lead his team to a championship win in college football history, and to do so with .1% chance of even making it with three games left in the season, Spencer has proven to somehow simultaneously both be and have the heart of this team. It remains to be seen how his relative lack of coaching experience (only two stops on his resume: Azusa Pacific and Boise State) will play out, but he was certainly and emphatically the choice of the current roster. But also, he is very clearly a gifted motivator and an intelligent leader and hopefully his capacity for building those relationships carries forward into future athletes.
Despite all the rumors of Kellen Moore potentially coming back, possibly even retaining Spencer Danielson as an assistant head coach, apparently that wasn’t able to come to fruition. And, frankly, Kellen is a tactician at the highest level and is well suited to remaining one. Even though he’s likely not long for the Chargers, due to the man currently running that team on the verge of an involuntary departure, he will have no shortage of job offers. As incredible as it would have been to have him back in the City of Trees, he has no college coaching experience whatsoever. With the landscape of college athletics changing so drastically and suddenly, it would be a disservice to both Kellen and Bronco nation to put him in place, with that lack of college experience, and hope for him to live up to the absolutely stupendous levels of hype that would almost certainly and immediately be draped around his neck. Also, lest we forget, the last head coach was a Bronco legend as well and…turns out, it’s a giant bummer when those don’t work out.
So, Spencer is the guy and Bronco Nation is very lucky he’ll be sticking around. Even if he sometimes says “Boise Nation” and will have to get some head coach tempering on-the-fly, Danielson has an infectious personality, an already impressive track record in leadership, and an impressive mind for defensive tactics. Let’s not forget that before he was game planning for one of the youngest defenses in the country, a year ago he had the 7th ranked defense in all the land. Several members of which he was able to develop into NFL talent. It will be a real coup if he is able to maintain most of the current staff, especially Bush Hamdan and Tim Keane, who have done an incredible job this season–especially down the stretch.
So, get excited, Bronco Nation! A coach that’s already 3-0 as the head man is now cemented in that role for the foreseeable future. Let’s look forward to a lot more reasons to celebrate that look just like this:

In the meantime (and always and forever)…Go Broncos!

I am so glad this is the decision that was made, I do think he has shown an incredible amount in a short time as a leader and molder of men, and I think this will allow the team to get through this portal season largely intact
Good news. It was nice to hear the first words in his on field interview after the game were “First off, thank you Jesus”.
I’m not 100% certain about Spencer, though I think he is the right hire for now.
I hope he is able to tap into Chris Petersen as a coaching mentor. I think Chris was at the game for a reason.
Go Broncos!
I agree. I don’t think there was really any choice–my sense is that he earned the job, and if he was let go, there would have been a massive exit of players in the transfer portal. Is he really experienced enough to lead this program into the future? I think the jury is still out but I’m hoping for the best.
100% Dan.
Danielson pulled out all the stops. Indeed, he did earn it.
I agree. Now to see how he functions as the man; putting a cork in the bottle that is the transfer portal had to be a primary concern. I think Hamdan has done a great job the last three weeks, and keeping him as OC should a no-brainer. Now, about a DC . . .
What’s his contact look like? Didn’t know if they’d keep him on a short leash after what happened to Avalos.
As fans, we have to trust JD. It would have been better to have someone with HC experience or at least some time that Danielson could have been mentored by an HC other than Avalos. Danielson is very unqualified when compared to previous successful BSU coaches (Koeter, Hawkins, Petersen, and Harsin) I hope he surrounds himself with really really smart people. I hope I’m really really wrong. I hope he can keep the band together. I hope he can keep Bush. Just don’t hire AA and I hope I’m really really wrong. I hope he can keep the band together.… Read more »
Welp…. Not exactly the flashy hire I was expecting from Dickey. But love his energy. He has a very good OC on staff. I’m all in.
Go get ‘em coach!!! Go Broncos!
It would sure be nice if JD could hire Koetter, Petersen, or Hawkins as analysts or advisors. That might be a hire Danielson could make.
It looks as if Moore is talking with the Panthers as their HC.
Again…
He has earned it! I have been really impressed with his playcalling, especially how he utilizes the players’ different talents to maximize their potential. Heck yeah, if you have the two best running backs and a mobile QB, put them all on the field at once and keep the defense guessing!
Awesome hire! Let’s keep it going against UCLA!
Advise to those thinking about the portal. A promise is as reliable as a fart in a frying pan. First of all, “Show me the money!”
