Taylen Green Is Officially Gone
Boise State has dealt with a LOT of excitement and volatility in the last few weeks. The highest highs were that the Broncos went from a .1% chance of even playing in the Mountain West Championship to actually winning the thing and that Ashton Jeanty reaffirmed his commitment to Boise State. One of the less ideal “lows”, however, is that it became official today that Taylen Green is leaving Boise State to continue the rest of his college athletic career at the University of Arkansas.
Obviously, this is not the preferred outcome. It’s likely that Taylen took into account the fact that he was officially supplanted as the starter at QB before the New Mexico game, and that it was primarily due to an MCL tear (just before halftime of that game–terrible luck for all involved) to the quarterback that replaced him that he ended up starting in and winning the remainder of those games. That said, it was always entirely possible that Taylen and Madsen could have had an open competition in the fall that he may have come out on top of. However, with the rules as they are presently constituted, Taylen opted to take the opportunity to transfer and will be trying his luck (and considerable skills) in the SEC in 2024. We harbor no ill will, are in fact grateful for his contributions as a Bronco, and wish him all the best! That is…unless Boise State ends up in a bowl game vs Arkansas next season! If it makes you feel any better, he’s far from the only quarterback—particularly the second from an Idaho university–that’s seeking opportunities elsewhere. This thread is a great summary of Taylen’s time in Boise:
Coach Avalos Statement and New Gig
No one had heard a peep from Coach Avalos until Jay Tust got in touch with him last night and got a statement from him. Avalos also got a strong parting endorsement from a former Bronco WBB legend, Brooke Pahukoa:
This adds some closure to the bittersweet Bronco coaching career of a legendary former Bronco linebacker. As for his coaching future, Coach Avalos has accepted a position to be the defensive coordinator for one of the participants in last season’s national championship game; Boise State’s old G5 rival, TCU:
Interesting Developments
As of last night, Ashton Jeanty was leading the votes as the name for one of Boise’s snow plows
In addition to having a snow plow named after him, Ashton and the king of punters, James Ferguson-Reynolds, were named to the AP’s All-America teams:
Lastly, East Carolina and Boise State have canceled their upcoming matchups for football:

A coworker showed me that McAlister ended up at TCU and that Avalos is going to be their DC. Seems weird that Eric leaves BSU because of Avalos and ends up at the same place…
What is the “False Narrative “ online about Avalos? Was it that the players didn’t like him?
So who is starting at QB in our bowl game?!?! I dunno but I’m super stoked for him!!! What a great opportunity!
Danielson said it’s likely going to be CJ Tiller, the true freshman, but Cult Fulton could get some time. Tiller wouldn’t burn his redshirt by playing so we could at least see what he has to offer
TG is going to a team that’s 4 and 8 overall on the season and 1 and 7 conference. I know it’s P5 but there’s no way to convince me Arkansas has a better program. Truly, a step down–maybe two. He’ll be closer to home and that may be important to him and his family.
I still wish him well. He seems like a nice kid.
It seemed as if he couldn’t perform well with competition from within the team. Some players are like that–it makes them play tight.
Maddog is a competitor. I hope he heals well.
Bobby Petrino is their new offensive coordinator. I won’t get into his off field stuff, but he coached Lamar Jackson when he won the Heisman, and a few others that were Heisman finalists. I don’t blame Green for taking advantage of the opportunity.
So, the #2 All Purpose Yards RB in the country, and the #1 punter in the country, also left off the finalist list for the Ray Guy award, are placed on the 2nd and 3rd AA teams? Oh brother! What a slap in their faces!!!! By the way, those rankings are from the NCAA current stats page….
I thought Avalos was one of the major reasons McAlister left BSU. That should provide an interesting facet of camaraderie for TCU .
Sometimes they say it’s the food and sometimes the service; when all along it just cost too much.
I wish Taylen well. I do think he was done a little “dirty” this season. Bench the guy if you need to (although, maybe he just needed more support and a game-plan tailored to his strengths?), but don’t call him the “starter” and then yank him after one play. I hope Madsen can be the guy, but we will sorely miss TG10. Unfortunately, Arkansas is a crap situation and I don’t see Taylen excelling there.
I can agree with that. He wasn’t great at times but Madsen didn’t show anything greater than what Green was doing. For every errant green throw there was a Madsen bone head freshman decision. Definitely felt like Avalos was panicking and looking for something to placate the fans. The real question is what sparked Bush to reevaluate how he was utilizing Green? Was Avalos dictating that to him or did he just have a come to Jesus moment realizing that his job was on the line and shake it up. In my opinion there was a huge difference in how… Read more »
Another thought occurred to me about the Bronco’s QB room. I notice when two players compete for a position and one does well, the camera always focuses on the two after one of them has a great play. These words are always said, “And guess who was the first one over there to congratulate him?” It’s always the guy competing. I’ve been in that position–you better be the first one. It’s not that you wish the other person to do badly or the team to lose. It’s another nail in your coffin. It is a time for terrible self-reflection. Often… Read more »
