#4, Maddux “Mad Dog” Madsen, RS Sophomore, QB

Credit: Broncosports.com

Stats

Height: 5’10

Weight: 201 (-10)

High school: American Fork HS (American Fork, UT)

How’d he get to The Blue™?

As a high school junior, he threw for 4,044 yards and 48 TDs. He ended up changing schools in time for baseball season his senior year and led his new team, Lehi High School, to their first state championship since 1981. Per broncosports.com: “he pitched and played infield that season (hit .455 with 11 2Bs, 4 HRs and 42 RBI)”

Maddux was part of the inaugural Avalos class in 2021. He got the offer after Katin Houser de-committed from Boise State to Michigan State, and it seems like it’s worked out very nicely for us. He was rated as the #21 high school player in Utah and designated a 3 star QB.  Madsen chose the Broncos over the Lobos of New Mexico.

Nickname

“Mad Dog”

This nickname has been with him since at least high school, and it seems to fit with his playing style, where he demonstrates a lot of toughness and fearlessness. Especially when he decides to tuck the ball and run it. Which…judging from the season ending injury incurred on one of those runs last year,  we should all hope he doesn’t do that more than is necessary!

Career Highlights

Maddux didn’t begin 2023 as the starter, and he didn’t end as that technically either, but he very much did earn that position in the middle of the season. Unfortunately, it only lasted for part of one game before he suffered a season-ending leg injury. Maddux initially came in and led what looked to be a game-winning drive vs UCF after the offense had struggled for much of the game. In total, in nine games, he completed 81 of 132 pass attempt for 1,991 yards (61.4%), nine TDs, and three interceptions. He added another 120 yards and two TDs on the ground. He compiled all those stats, despite officially only starting one of the nine games he played in.

The majority of his high school highlights can be found here. The one below is pretty good too!

2024 Prospectus

Maddux has taken the reigns of the Bronco offense, having been named the starter for Georgia Southern just last week. This development has been especially impressive because in doing so, he held off a former number 1 high school QB recruit (after beating out the current starting QB at an SEC school mid-season of last year) to do so. His leadership and command of the offense seem to have been the key difference in the decision. The offense tends to become very efficient when Madsen takes the field. While he didn’t have any 80+ yard TD runs, he did have an 83 yard pass last year against San Jose State, so it’s not as though he can’t orchestrate offensive explosions too!

Is he on Twitter?

@MadduxMadsen, if you want to follow him. He even occasionally does more than retweet!

Completely made up fact

Maddux is down ten pounds from last season. This is due to him releasing the weight of the world when he was finally named the starter. Turns out, when transmogrified into psychological pressure, the weight of the world is only…ten pounds.
