Broncos 42, Spartans 21
In front of an incredibly subdued crowd in San Jose, the Boise State Broncos went on the road and secured a road win against yet another Mountain West opponent.

The Broncos started with a three and out but then seemed to get an early momentum swing when they recovered a fumble and returned it past midfield on the ensuing Spartan possession. Unfortunately, some zebra colored people (incorrectly, imo) saw differently and overturned the call. The Spartans scored a few short plays later.
Spartans 7, Broncos 0
Boise State had a shot to answer, but they weren’t able to get into the end zone and lined up for a field goal…but it was a fake! And, unfortunately, failed. San Jose responded by repeatedly launching the ball down field–like they do–down the field and got in for another six.
Second Quarter
Spartans 14, Broncos 0
On the ensuing kickoff, Cameron Bates took a shot that jarred the ball loose and San Jose recovered. Luckily, the Spartan’s short-field drive petered. They overturned on downs when they failed to convert on a 4th and 3. The Broncos were able to respond by driving 92 yards for a touchdown. Madsen put the exclamation point on the drive by running it into the end zone on a hard-fought keeper.
Spartans 14, Broncos 7
The Spartans had the chance to score again before the half but then their quarterback made the mistake of lofting a ball basically right to Ty Benefield. Boise State made them pay after a 70 yard drive that ended with an Ashton Jeanty two yard TD plunge.

HALFTIME
Third Quarter
The Spartans kicked off the scoring in the third quarter with a 3:57, 98 yard drive that ended with a six yard rush for a TD. It would also be their last points in the game. So, the Bronco defense basically pitched a shutout for most of the second half.
Spartans 21, Broncos 14
Boise State’s offense answered back in short order. They put together an 8 play, 48 yard drive of their own that ended with Maddux Madsen and Matt Lauter connecting for a 17-yard TD.
Spartans 21, Broncos 21
It seems the Broncos have appeased whatever vengeful turnover gods they had angered early on in the season because the last few games have actually been pretty great on that front! This game fits that pattern as well. Toward the end of the 3rd, a vicious hit loosened up the arms of a San Jose ball carrier and Jayden Virgin-Morgan snagged it out of the air. The Broncos capitalized with an 8 play, 63 yard drive of their own that concluded when (a still-seemingly-pretty-beat-up) Ashton Jeanty housed it from 36 yards away.
Broncos 28, Spartans 21
Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter was all Broncos. They turned a weirdly tight game into a runaway. First, with 94 yard drive that ended with another Jeanty TD from five yards out.
Broncos 35, Spartans 21
To complete the scoring, the Bronco defense again made their presence felt. Davon Banks intercepted a pass from Eget and ran it 30 yards to the end zone for six more points.
Final Score: Broncos 42, Spartans 21
Observations:
- The Broncos allowed 443 passing yards, but they also picked the ball off twice, scored both times (one without the offense ever taking the field), and held the Spartan run game completely in check. San Jose State’s leading rusher only had 37 yards on 13 carries.
- Madsen threw for another 286 yards, a TD, and had no interceptions. Just another very efficient game, where he spread the ball around a lot. Camper, Caples, Strachan, and Lauter all had big catches. Even Chase Penry had a nice, clutch 16 yarder for a first down!
- Dalmas unfortunately had a very uncharacteristic missed kick that came after Hassanein had recovered a fumble to give the offense another possession.
- Ashton Jeanty didn’t have as many yards as is typical for him (“just” 159 lol), but he scored three times. Again. He also passed Jay Ajayi for most rushing yards in a season by a Boise State running back…and he still has two regular season games left. However, he came off the field on his final TD grimacing and then it seemed like Austin Bolt was consoling him on the sideline about something. This is all wild speculation, but he also seemed kind of bummed out in sideline shots. Is it possible he exacerbated an injury? Reeeeeally hope not!
We’ll see you all same time next week at Laramie, vs the Wyoming Cowboys. Feel free to discuss the game in the comments below. In the meantime, and always…

My emotions have settled down now, after that last sack😂.
BSU once again found a way to win, and win they did.
Madsen had a good bounceback game and Jeanty another32 carries. We need to call him IRON MAN. Yong man is tough as nails.
Dubar is getting a few more snaps. That’s good. It may pay dividends later. Who doesn’t love TCrowe? Why can’t our guys make the catches their guys make? This is a good football team despite special teams. I can remember the day when our kickoff team used to meet the runner before he gained too much steam. Are our guys getting blocked or are they slow? Koetter knows more about football than any Bronco fan. Let this sink in; who was the last QB to have the Broncos at 9 and 1? This would have been a much bigger win… Read more »
I have to agree-the Heisman committee can’t let Jeanty win because he isn’t from one of the supposed <fake> blue blood schools.
Our DB’s appear to need a new coach. It doesn’t seem to be talent that we’re lacking.
How about those Jeanty YPC when the box is stacked??? Since they go way down with 9 or more in the box, how about a little play action or fake when (if??) that’s recognized? Quick hitters gain yards and open up more of the passing game as well as the run game.
I don’t like to talk about a guy losing his job. But they make a quarter of a million plus per year. They will soon find another job. It is a life they chose. Something ain’t right. Either it’s a player or a coach. Broncos get the best recruits in the conference.
There are enough references to Jesus on this team that it’s time for somebody to have a come-to-Jesus moment.
I believe the DB coach was an Avalos holdover. I watch other teams, both in and out of conference and, their DB’s seem to be able to make plays. I agree with your assessment regarding recruits so, where does the problem lie? It’s merely a process of elimination.
You know what? I’ve had some real self-examination. I have another team I root for, and they’re pretty good. But I’ve found out that I complain about the same things. For some reason, I always think the other team’s success is my team’s failure. Anyway, I’m gonna shut up–for a while at least.
It will most likely be Travis Hunter considering he plays both ways & is a massive part of Colorado’s success & the voters like the whole Deion angle (ratings).
As long as Ashton makes it to New York & is at the ceremony, I’m happy. It will do wonders for recruiting & ticket sales, & BSU’s legacy.
Name any other G5 school with TWO ✌️ Heisman finalists.
Agree, on all counts. I just hope the voters feel charitable.
Well, we’re now at #4 and have opportunity to skip the 1st round & be the “home team” (neutral site) in the 2nd round around New Years. I think the best case scenario is for UNLV to win out & for Colorado State to do the same so we face CSU in the championship rather than a rematch with UNLV (makes me nervous). Prat that Notre Dame dismantles Army with an extreme thrashing & that Memphis upsets Tulane. A 9-3 Tulane in the championship game against Army (1 loss) helps tremendously). I certainly hope that Arizona State upsets BYU &… Read more »
Agree, on all counts.
Great points. I also am very much hoping that Colorado State wins out and we meet them in the MWC Championship. It is always hard to beat a good team twice in a season; if we had to meet UNLV again, it would be the third meeting and second championship game – too much tempting fate.
