Boise State vs New Mexico Game Recap: Final Score Boise State 41, New Mexico 25
1st Quarter
This game was weird at first, but really redeemed itself in the 4th quarter. In front of a crowd of 32,982, it began with Boise State’s defense forcing back-to-back turnovers. The first, a Marco Notarainni fumble recovery, and the second an A’marion McCoy interception… but they only came away with 3 points.
Boise State 3, New Mexico 0
Later in the first quarter, however, the Bronco offense started to click and they were able to put together a 74 yard drive that ended with a two yard Sire Gaines plunge into the end zone.
Boise State 10, New Mexico 0
2nd Quarter
Unfortunately, UNM was able to counter with an immediate score on the first play of quarter no. 2, via a 100 yard kick return for a TD.
Boise State 10, New Mexico 7
The bad guys were actually able to take the lead soon after, following an eight play, 58 yard drive that ended with a one yard TD pass.
New Mexico 14, Boise State 10
Not content to allow the Lobos to take a lead into the locker room at the half, the Broncos put together a 14 play, 75 yard drive a little bit before halftime. After taking 7:10 off of the clock, Madsen found Ben Ford open, just outside the right side of the end zone, for a six yard TD.

HALFTIME
3rd Quarter
The Broncos received to start the second half and moved right down the field and deep into Lobo territory. Once there, however, the offensive line had back-to-back penalties on third down, so Colton Boomer trotted out to attempt a 50 yard kick. I say “attempt”, but Yoda says “Do or do not. There is no [attempt].” So, Colton “did”, and the Broncos added another three to the board.
Boise State 20, New Mexico 14
New Mexico was able to answer back with field goal of their own after 10 plays and 64 yards.
Boise State 20, New Mexico 17
4th Quarter
After an exceptionally sloppy third quarter, the Broncos started off Q4 by completing a drive that began the quarter before and covered 75 yards. It ended when Sire Gaines carried a pile of defenders into the end zone from four yards out.
Boise State 27, New Mexico 17
Boise State followed their first 4th quarter score by the defense getting a turnover on downs at midfield. They immediately followed that up by running the ball right at the Lobos’ defense and scoring another TD–albeit accidentally–on a botched field goal attempt. After a bobbled snap, the holder, Oscar Doyle, tossed it to Troy Grizzle for a highly unexpected TD. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, but it’s also sometimes beneficial to be good at being lucky!
Boise State 34, New Mexico 17
On the following New Mexico possession, Ty Benefield picked off a desperate UNM pass. After four plays, Boise State was in the end zone again. This time on a 25 yard, 4th down connection to Ben Ford (again!) from Madsen.
New Mexico scored a garbage time touchdown against backups, including a successful two-point conversion.
Final: Boise State 41, New Mexico 25
Observations
- The offensive line needs to stop getting penalties, especially on third down, and ESPECIALLY in the other team’s red zone
- New Mexico’s defense came to play. They had 20 TFLs so far on the season, but had 10 in the first half alone tonight. They also finished with 4 sacks
- Also, just after halftime, the Broncos had 28 minutes of possession, compared to only 9 for New Mexico. With that kind of disparity, a lead of only three points (at the time) was…perplexing. To say the least.
- Credit to the Broncos, when it came time to put the game away, they very much did. The fourth quarter for BSU went: TD, 4th down stop, TD, INT, TD. They didn’t allow that garbage time TD as well, but…whatever.
- Maddux was back to his usually efficient and turnover-free self. He ended 21-31 for 226 yards and 2 TDs.

Having watched the game, we won because UNM was gassed. As mentioned in the game thread, our OL was nowhere to be found. Is this not almost the entirely same group as last year? And, to where did our sack machine disappear? Also, Madsen’s receivers once again made him look good. One thing I have noticed is the lack of a leader on the field. It sure isn’t Madsen. This game should have been a blowout, and that’s disconcerting. Certainly, the play calling came into the mix, as I saw a lot of vanilla. You’d think six games into the… Read more »
Amazing, all night long, I kept saying to myself, “Where’s the fire?”
Me too, as well as my son.
Despite no fire, it was a win. Matoyer has to take some medication. Too many twitches before the snap. Madsen missed some, and the receivers missed some. Doyle should start taking some snaps at QB. Grizzle’s arms look like two sides of beef hanging from his shoulders. Hats off to Ben Ford. He seems to be ready for the ball when others are not so much. Madsen had an andquete night. I don’t think the fan base’ll love him until he drops a couple of 50 or 60-yarders. Madsen is all we’ve got for now. The o-line reminds me of… Read more »
Almost forgot. Boomer is living up to his name. Wow! A 50-yarder!
However, he kicks them in the endzone, and they still give up at TD. And by the way, even though Boomer didn’t catch up with the runner on that TD run, he does have a good set of wheels.
Special teams, well, they did fall into a pile of poop and come out smelling like a rose. But allowing that run, same ole, same ole.
I forgot about that 50-yarder! Thanks for the reminder!
At least BSU isn’t Penn State. We aren’t having the year we thought we would, but at least we’re winning games.
Man, PSU has taking a beating this year. Lost 3 in a row, just lost their starting QB and now their head coach has been fired. Ouch…
Was at the game. It was a great atmosphere. Had a great time. Having lived in Oregon for 10 years now, the rain wasn’t bad at all. Sad to see so many bail. My main concern with Avalos was that he wasn’t putting the best players on the field in positions to help us win. Unfortunately, I’m starting to see that with Danielson. The wide receiver position continues to be a mystery. We trot out the same lineup, but in must have situations, it’s typically Ford or Bates/Brown making the plays. They get the best separation and run the best… Read more »
