Notable Notes

  • Tyler Keinath is hurt a little bit, so Jason Steele is filling in for him.
  • Sounds like right tackle might not just be handed to last year’s starter, Hall Schmidt. Danielson said Schmidt has done great, but Daylon Metoyer has as well (“Big Lou”, as they call him). They’ll be competing there. Kyle Cox in the mix as well. Jake Steele is kind of a swing guy for the tackle spots.
  • Sire Gaines and Chris Marshall will be ready day one; their nagging injuries are all cleared up.
  • David Latu, Keinath, and Hall Schmidt will be out for a bit to start camp.
  • Braxton Fely addressed and essentially apologized to the team for his dalliance with the portal, but it’s been all green since then
  • Max Stege seems to be the field side end, replacing Hassanein. Malachi Williams mentioned, Bol Bol as well. Also pointed out that Roman Kaywood is incredibly talented; he’s just been hurt a lot
  • Derek Ganter Jr is confirmed as a safety. Jaden Mickey will be competing at nickel “to get as many of the best players on the field as possible” [at the same time]. He’s competing with Davon Banks there.
  • Jeremiah Earby and A’Marion McCoy starting at the corner spots. Mentioned Freeney and Tolmaire as standing out.
  • Staff retention was priority, rather than adding new positions
  • Is the Tampering/portal is frustrating? “Goll ee…yes. But I try to be a problem solver…I still call every one of the coaches that tamper with our players. Right is right even if no one is doing it. Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.” (paraphrasing)
  • Addressed poor tackling and lack of turnovers last year, as well as zero strip sacks, despite leading the nation in sacks. Says they’re definitely working on growing and repping to increase those. They’ll be practicing tackling to the ground in the fall. Estimates as as many as 20 easy takeaways left on the table last season.
  • Competition breeds focus, so no one is getting preferential anything.
  • Addressing linebacker: Says Marco (one of the best we’ve ever had here), Ripp is ready to be a starter, Martin and Phelps will also be in the mix. Brackett and Tuioti have the chance to play as true freshmen
